What Is Oral-Conscious Sedation?

Thanks to advances in dental techniques and technologies, even the most advanced treatments can be performed with minimal discomfort to the patient. However, there are still many individuals who avoid getting necessary care because of anxiety around dental procedures. That's why Dr. Candace Brown offers oral-conscious sedation to help you feel more tranquil and relaxed during your visit. These anti-anxiety medications can be prescribed and taken prior to your dental appointment to help keep you in a relaxed state of mind while keeping you awake and alert. To learn more about oral-conscious sedation for your treatments at Fresh Dentistry, ask about a consultation with our Cedar Hill, TX dental team right away.

What Can I Expect with Oral-Conscious Sedation?

Before prescribing any medication, our team will review your medical history and concerns to determine if oral-conscious sedation is appropriate for you. Dr. Brown will prescribe your sedation medication during your consultation so you can have it filled before your procedure. You will need to take the medication prior to arriving at our facility so please plan for a responsible adult to give you a ride to our practice. If you have chosen light oral-conscious sedation, you'll remain at ease but still be aware and conscious. With moderate sedation, you will also be conscious, but your memory will start to get a bit spotty. You may drift off to sleep, but it'll be easy to wake you up.

After your procedure is done, you will need to have someone you can trust to take you home and look after you as you recover from the sedation. You won't be capable of driving a car until the next day (after you've had the chance to sleep off the medication). Dr. Brown will talk to you during your consultation about the possible side effects of the specific medication chosen for you. Usually, patients experience nausea, vomiting, headaches, and dizziness after oral-conscious sedation. The threat of vomiting and/or nausea can be reduced by having a light meal prior to taking the medication and eating a small snack approximately one hour following your procedure. Contact our office if you have any lingering side effects or if you have questions after your procedure.

My family and I are new patients here and our experience has been stellar! My 5 year old has had a not so positive relationship with the dentist until he came here. He was relaxed, happy and I loved the patience, care and how they informed him of what they were doing the entire way! My husband and I also had an amazing experience from the front desk, to the nurses, to the hygienist, right on up to Dr. Brown!!! You feel the care, expertise and love for your teeth from the time you walk in the doors! 10/10 recommend!

The front office staff is always friendly, welcoming, and professional, setting the tone for a great experience from the moment you walk in. Dr. Candace Brown, in particular, exemplifies what quality care should be. She upholds the highest standards of professionalism, taking the time to be thorough in her diagnosis, explaining services clearly, and ensuring that I am comfortable with each treatment plan. This service-oriented mindset is evident throughout the entire practice. Every staff member—from the assistants to the hygienists and fellow dentists—shows the same dedication to excellent patient care. Even the front office team mirrors this commitment. I truly appreciate the consistent, top-notch care I receive here.

“I’ve been to dentist across the country. Fresh Dentistry is the best. I literally have driven across Texas to get dental work here. Now I don’t drive as far, only about 75 miles one way. Worth the drive!

About Us
Can I eat before my appointment if I am undergoing oral-conscious sedation?

If you are scheduled for oral-conscious sedation, it is generally advisable to consume a light meal a few hours before taking the medication. This can help minimize feelings of nausea that some patients experience after sedation. However, specific instructions regarding eating and drinking will be provided during your consultation at Fresh Dentistry.

What should I do if I experience side effects from oral-conscious sedation?

After undergoing oral-conscious sedation, some common side effects include nausea, vomiting, headaches, or dizziness. If you experience any of these symptoms or other concerns, it's important to contact our office immediately. Our Cedar Hill, TX team is equipped to provide you with guidance on how to alleviate your symptoms and can assess if further medical attention is necessary.

How long should I plan to have a responsible adult with me following my dental procedure with sedation?

For your safety, it's essential that you do not attempt to drive or operate heavy machinery until the effects of the oral-conscious sedation have fully worn off, which usually means waiting until the next day. Plan to have a responsible adult accompany you to your appointment and stay with you for at least the rest of the day following your procedure. This person can help monitor your recovery, assist you at home, and provide support in case of any complications or side effects from the sedation.
