What Is A Bone Graft?

When it comes to dental health, you might only think about your gums and teeth. In truth, your jawbone also plays a major role in your overall oral wellness. If your jawbone is weakened from missing teeth or physical trauma, you may need a bone graft so your jaw can securely hold both dental implants and your natural teeth. A bone graft helps to strengthen and build up your jawbone until it is stable enough to hold a dental implant. At Fresh Dentistry, osseous surgery is used to prepare your jawbone before implant surgery to replace missing or weak teeth. If injuries or lost teeth have compromised your jawbone, schedule an appointment with Dr. Candace Brown at our Cedar Hill, TX office to learn how a bone graft might help.

What Can I Expect During My Bone Graft?

Bone grafts are generally performed after a tooth extraction to reinforce the jawbone. The specifics of your bone graft surgery will depend on where the grafted material is coming from and how much is needed. You may have bone removed from your own body from areas, like your chin, shin, or hip, which is known as an autograft. An autograft may be performed in our office using sedation and local anesthesia or at a surgical facility under general anesthesia. Additional graft options include an allograft, which harvests bone from a donor, or an alloplast, which uses synthetic materials. During your initial consultation, Dr. Brown will review your options and discuss which one is appropriate for you.

Once the graft is ready, the treatment area will be cleaned and disinfected. After that, an incision will be made in the gums and the graft will be affixed to the jawbone using materials that are absorbed by the body. Over the next nine months, the graft will bond with your jawbone through a process called osseointegration. Within this timeframe, it's crucial to follow a good oral care routine with brushing and flossing, plus any additional products suggested by Dr. Brown. She may prescribe antibiotics or pain medication for any discomfort and inflammation after the bone graft. You may need to make additional appointments at Fresh Dentistry to check your healing and to determine when your mouth is ready for dental implants.

“I’ve been to dentist across the country. Fresh Dentistry is the best. I literally have driven across Texas to get dental work here. Now I don’t drive as far, only about 75 miles one way. Worth the drive!
